Land Rover – Range Rover 2010 LCD Display – Shit Yeah!

Start video from Marker 00:50. Just been looking at the Land Rover – Range Rover 2010 model , I just love the in-dash display that they have going on. They have replaced the more traditional tactile gauges (which are great don’t get me wrong) with a new 12 inch TFT-LCD virtual instrument panel uses the same technology found in high-quality computer laptops and can be both personalized and adapted to suit various driving conditions or driver preferences. Shit yeah now it feels like I’m in 2010 rather than stuck in the 90′s. During night-time driving, for instance, the TFT-LCD virtual instrument panel’s ‘torchlight’ setting highlights only the essential information on the speedometer and odometer. Additionally, when driving off-road, key dynamic information is displayed in the center of the TFT screen, complementing the main Touch-screen display and providing valuable ‘at a glance’ vehicle status. Love it…Wish I had one to muck around in.

I also love how they have used the in-dash (twin view) display to work seamlessly with the main/center display system. Each information being displayed is relevant to the other screen and vice-versa. The centerpiece of the facia is the high resolution Touch-screen, with an intuitive interface and array of controls which lets you command almost every aspect of the vehicle from a single point. This has been enhanced even further with clearer, more intuitive graphics and is accommodated in a raised centre control panel with an improved, stronger, more contemporary design.

“The new display technology used by the 2010 Range Rover is a major advance. It gives us tremendous flexibility in presenting information, so that the driver gets precisely the data they require, in all driving conditions,” explains Nick Rogers, Chief Engineer, New Vehicle Architecture.

Perfectly stated. Being a Land Rover enthusiast and a Designer would have loved to work on the user experience of the dash this would have been a sweet project to work on. Great Job Land Rover.

Wow……Wow… pretty sweet…I think the only missing part is “additional data”, for the curious mind. The campaign has legs its just a matter of giving the data for the public to consume. Data meaning how high did it go? what was the average speed? Time to reach a certain point in the atmosphere? etc etc. Can’t complain tho this is pretty cool with a “wow” factor. One more thing love the “eeery” sound track and the editing is pretty tight.

I’m pretty impressed, great technical style illustrations, the attention of the details is crazy, I’m guessing each illustration would have taken a hell of a long time to do. Radionacional is the design label from Stephan Walter.

The EyeWriter project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people, who are suffering from ALS, with creative technologies. It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes. Just Brilliant!

The Vertical Newspaper

Thoughts — Tags: , , — Tyrone Samson @ 11:46 am

An interesting idea on laying out “the newspaper” vertically rather than what it is today. Seems like a “duh” moment. It would be intersting who will adopt this format. I’ve seen this done for so many years by small indie magazines, it’s nice to see those trends moving into “main-stream” publications – about time. Newspapers are shutting down left, right and center these days and seems like this is one small step that can make a difference maybe? Evolve or die!

Let there be Light

Art Installation combining light and display functionality. Two digits of 7-segment display –formed using industrial fluorescent tubes– are suspended from the ceiling. The installation is light sign, information carrier, and light source at the same time. As a “display”, the installation is used to show the current time in minutes. At the same time –as light installation– it is the only light source inside the exhibition space and therefore it serves as the necessary pragmatic lighting source. While the displayed information is changing every minute, the over all light intensity is kept on a constant level during all times, thus the appearance of the exhibition space is changed subtly but constantly.

The goal is not to beguile the viewer with shiny objects, rather it is to collect and organize the environment in a subtle, non-intrusive, yet fundamentally altering way. This effort ideally breathes some life into the ambient technology, perhaps even some playfulness, which hints at the potential without an overt aesthetic agenda, and with an incorporative attitude towards content. Would love to have this in my living room…

The Art of Curves

CAR

Drowning in a sea of sharp lines and edgy Bangelized surfaces, the era of sensuous curves seem to have elided us. Whether the inspiration is the femal form, or the weathering smoothness of rocks immemorial, the human psyche resonates with flowing lines and cohesive surfaces.

This yearning for elegance has led us to one of the most inspired designs in the history of Automotive form. The 1957 Aston Martin DRB2 Lemans Race car epitomizes the pinnacle of gorgeous design, when cars were still being described as sexy. The RA relies heavily on the long genius of master artisans, and has assuaged the design to accommodate the demands of a 21st century road car while retaining its inherent beauty.
