krink

One of the many legendary New York street artists out there… Craig “KR” Costello customized a Mini Cooper S with his signature KRINK aesthetic. Would be great if you could actually get this as a “real” paint job on the mini site.

voyeur

Felipe Morozini, a São Paulo based photographer, takes voyeuristic pictures of people on their balconies or on the roofs of apartment buildings. Testimonial: “Felipe has a very intimate bond with his city. Watching people at their balconies or on the roofs of big appartment buildings, you get the sense of how this enormous and colorful city lives and breathes. You can actually transfer yourself at Sao Paulo and feel the heat of a summer ‘siesta’. Felipe makes me wanna visit his city and meet it’s inhabitants and his wonderful friends..” perfectly said…

Bus-Tops is a London based project which was shortlisted and now won the Artists Taking The Lead fund, a collaboration between the Arts Council and LOCOG. The project intends to install a number of LED displays on the roof’s of Bus Shelters across London. It is going to be the largest physical computing project ever devised. Part of the submission included a custom designed web application where visitors can design what is going to be projected on the bus stops. In addition bus.tops will work with established artists to create a “curated” collection of works distributed across the bus.tops canvas. You can find out more about the project on bus-tops.com (post from creative applications)

NEWS

This is a great example that shows you don’t need to have a Fortune 500 client to do great work. Signage for a local newsagent, the area attracts tourists daily any communication needs to be understood by all. The result was to make every day shopping a fun experience that brings a smile to your face. Love the simple icons used to create this classic identity, even tho it’s just for your local newsagent.

The Styrofoam Hummer

hummer

American artist Andrew Junge created the Styrofoam Hummer, using styrofoam scavenged from the dump, Junge sculptured a 5.2m long, 1.8m high and 2.4m wide Hummer to highlight waste and consumption in North American culture. (post from greenmuze). I can see this idea being used as an ad for something (Toyota Prius maybe?) if it hasn’t already.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie…

carla

Another great young aussie studio (AFOM), producing some fresh, tight work. Description of work above: Carla works predominantly on a large loom, weaving rows of thread around the reeds of the loom to form her pieces. Her new identity graphically represents this process of weaving. The colour palette of black and white, inspired by technical weaving diagrams lends the identity an Op=art quality and also ties in with her tendency towards minimal color schemes. The business card is printed with raised ink to echo the tactile qualities of her woven pieces. The identity has different variations which playfully change for the business card, letterhead and website.

If I was Blogging In 2008…

Inspirations — Tags: , , — Tyrone Samson @ 9:58 pm

If I was blogging in 2008 I would have definitely have blogged about this back then, superb signage created by fellow sydney-siders and another studio that I greatly admire and would chop my right arm to work for FROST just brilliant, amazing no wonder it won a shit-tonne of awards.

Coined the “Flip Dot Wall”, Frost Design created an interactive art piece that utilises over 9000 revolving dots to create unlimited animations. The wall is 5 metres wide and 6 metres high and illustrates images or text in either black or brilliant red. Based on the same technology commonly seen in airports or buses, one of its great advantages is that the piece can be programmed to carry a multitude of sequences — some poetic, some factual, and some simply fun. It can change according to season, event or achievement, and can be adapted for functions in the foyer to become part of the entertainment. As the dots move through their paces they create a subtle audio ambience and air-movement that extends the experience beyond the visual. Depending on the transition affect and timing, the dots create an acoustic ripple, a loud bang or a soft flutter. Bloody brilliant!

Matt Pyke x MTV

Inspirations — Tags: , , — Tyrone Samson @ 5:02 pm

One of my heroes Matt Pyke of Universal Everything, has been asked directly to devise the on-air, web and print rebrand of MTV for an international audience of 524 million viewers. Its purpose to cement the channel’s reputation as a powerhouse of youth-oriented programming and creative output.

The sound design plays a key part in the branding, a unique MTV ‘pulse’ runs through all idents and promos – the content reacting and dancing along. The video above is my fav so far love the simplicity and the beats synchronized to the animation, just sweet.

Honda EV-N, I Bloody Want One.

honda

Honda has come out with a concept car that makes the mini and prius a thing of the past. The Honda EV-N a retro styled battery powered (of course) car that even has smartly integrated inside the drivers door for the U3-X (think of segway on one wheel). I’m guessing tho that this will never see the light of day, which would be like pissing in the wind, why tease us in the first place, whats the point… I guess it might inspire some thing else down the track, but shit give the people what they want.

Pluto Pluto

Just got this beautiful app today, not bad at all for $1.99, love the simple interface. Pluto Pluto is an App for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to create endless beats and rhythms by throwing around three reversing pluto balls. Just double-tap to start! You can create, erase, grab and throw each of the three balls. Double-tap to pause and switch between different sound modes at the top of the screen. Pluto Pluto not a traditional instrument replicated on the iPhone. It’s a completely novel interface that works more as a tool to discover new rhythms. Only wished that I could export out as a ringtone.

Guitar Hero – The Pentagram Way

hero

Another example why Pentagram is the bench mark of design studios. The original Guitar Hero logotype expressed the brand’s heavy metal roots. Idiosyncratic with a vengeance, it became more and more complicated with the introduction of successive game versions. The extension of the “Hero” brand to new platforms, including Band Hero and DJ Hero, called for a redrawn logotype that could consistently work across the range of product types. Pentagram redrew the original Guitar Hero logotype, adjusting some of its more aggressively odd features to enable accurate reproduction at a variety of scales and in media from digital animations to temporary (or permanent) tattoos.

In addition, the new logotype serves as a basis of an extendable system, unifying the presentation of Guitar Hero, Band Hero, and DJ Hero in a consistent brand architecture. The new logotypes, simple and straightforward in black and white, are intended to serve as a starting point for an infinite range of visual expressions in the classic Guitar Hero tradition. To demonstrate the range of possibilities during the design exploration, Pentagram commissioned several designers to create variations using the same base artwork, this is also known as the classic MTV case-study. (post from Pentagram)

Another One Bites The Dust

Rants — Tags: , , — Tyrone Samson @ 2:46 pm

RAND

It’s a sad day when you hear that another Paul Rand classic being “updated”. First established in 1908 and operating from a small office in Manhattan, it wasn’t until 1961 that Yale University Press (YUP) officially became a part of Yale University while remaining, all this time, financially and operationally independent. YUP has published over 8,000 books and now does so at a rate of approximately 300 titles a year. And since 1985, much of these titles have carried the idiosyncratic logo designed by Paul Rand. After this point, 24 years later, Rand’s logo will no longer grace spines, instead, it will now be the primary Yale logo — typeset in Matthew Carter’s The Yale Typeface designed in 2004. (as reported by the Yale Daily News). A sad day no matter what the bloody rational they try and say to justify the change.

Interacting Without Touching – Nearness

Inspirations — Tags: , , , — Tyrone Samson @ 11:03 pm

The film Nearness explores interacting without touching. With RFID it’s proximity that matters, and actual contact isn’t necessary. Much of Timo’s work in the Touch project addresses the fictions and speculations in the technology. Here they play with the problems of invisibility and the magic of being close. The work refers fondly to the Fischli and Weiss The Way Things Go film and its controversial offspring The Honda ‘Cog’ commercial (post from berglondon). Execution is flawless hats off.

An older post that’s done the rounds but would like to mention it again as its so just bloody nice: Edgy, monochromatic music video for Friendly Fires, directed by Clemens Habicht (another great aussie talent). The band were transformed into Skeleton Boys as a nod to the track’s title, with the aid of double-sided sticky tape, fans and trillions of bean bag balls.

Wonderwall, one of the tightest shit I’ve seen for a long time, super fresh interface. Just love the way in which it reacts as well as the small details from the little sound cues that it makes. And how those simple cues have been carried throughout the experience. From the talented Yugo Nakumura/tha ltd. Wish I had half of his brain. Bloody amazing! The site by the way is for an interior design studio in the land of the rising sun. Kudos to them for taking the risk.
