A sleek concept car has introduced a new design theme for Japanese car maker Mazda. Mazda has revealed its future design direction with the sleek Shinari concept car. The coupe-like four-door embraces the new Kodo design theme, which replaces the Nagare look that has formed the basis for Mazda design for years. Kodo translates to “soul of motion”, something Mazda designers are trying to capture with an athletic, low slung stance that melds distinctive creases with flowing character lines.

The Telsa Model S is coming deliveries start 2012, great thing about the car not only is it electric you can choose from one of three battery pack options to suit typical driving needs: 160, 230, or 300 miles per charge. Concerned with Range Anxiety? Like the Roadster, the Model S is engineered to plug into nearly any outlet, anywhere in the world. Plus, with the 45 minute QuickCharge or 1 minute battery swap, the car begs to be driven everywhere you want to go, it can seat 7 people and teh greatest thing of it all has a beast interior display a gigantic 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity means with a few quick taps, access to streaming radio, gps navigation, restaurant recommendations, and movie showtimes. Can’t wait till they start showing the experience around the UI for this. oh all under 50k cha ching!.

Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed tower design, Choi + Shine Architects have created a series of towers that are powerful, solemn and variable. These iconic pylon-figures will become monuments in the landscape. Seeing the pylon-figures will become an unforgettable experience, elevating the towers to something more than merely a functional design of necessity. The pylon-figures can be configured to respond to their environment with appropriate gestures. As the carried electrical lines ascend a hill, the pylon-figures change posture, imitating a climbing person. Over long spans, the pylon-figure stretches to gain increased height, crouches for increased strength or strains under the weight of the wires. Despite the large number of possible forms, each pylon-figure is made from the same major assembled parts (torso, fore arm, upper leg, hand etc.) and uses a library of pre-assembled joints between these parts to create the pylon-figures’ appearance. This design allows for many variations in form and height while the pylon-figures’ cost is kept low through identical production, simple assembly and construction. Like the statues of Easter Island, it is envisioned that these one hundred and fifty foot tall, modern caryatids will take on a quiet authority, belonging to their landscape yet serving the people, silently transporting electricity across all terrain, day and night, sunshine or snow.

The Truncheons are a family of lamps consisting of a suspension, an articulated task lamp, and a freestanding Truncheon to be rested against a wall. Harnessing the tooled traces left by a CNC lathe, the Truncheon body is surfaced with a delicate, metered scallop. At close viewing, the rhythm of this cross-grain scalloping creates a soft interplay with the more linear wood grain of the maple and walnut. Each lamp holds an LED bulb which is warm in color, yet cool to the touch. Viewed indirectly from the lamp’s interior hardwood surfaces, the light emitted is rich in quality while maintaining the efficient characteristics that has driven the development of LED light. The Truncheon task lamp sits in a poured, weighted base of gypsum and marble. Free of electrical components, the heavy base allows the arm of the lamp to make a soft rotation. Avoiding unnecessary knobs or switches, the Truncheons adhere to their namesake- precise, compact sticks fashioned out of traditional materials. Created by New-York studio Commonwealth.

Sketch Chair by Greg Saul is a exploration in using computation and rapid manufacturing techniques to allow users to design and build their own products or in this case their own chairs. Created in Processing, the application allows users to take part in the entire process of designing and building their own chairs. Chairs are designed using a simple 2D sketch-based interface and design validation tools. Thereafter chairs can be fabricated from sheet materials cut by a laser cutter, CNC milling machine or papercutters. I love the “simulation” & “simulation figure” feature, amazing. But the narrator’s voice on the video seems like he needs to stand back from the mic a bit, I can hear drop of saliva in his mouth.

Meta-Mirror is a concept application that delivers an enhanced television experience without disrupting the conventional expectations of home entertainment. It allows viewers to access content relevant to the program currently being viewed. The product is a software platform which runs on a secondary device of the users choice, displaying this contextual content over a mirror of the television broadcast. By bringing together live television, real-time contextual information and an intuitive user interface, Meta Mirror is positioned to update television from uni-directional broadcast to two-way interaction. In lifestyle programming (image above) tagged objects, in this case ingredients, become clickable. This in combination with 3rd party supermarket plugins makes putting together shopping baskets simple. More information can be found at notion, fingers crossed hopefully this proof of concept becomes a reality.

Mercedes Benz Museum, designed by dutch architects UN Studio, is based on the geometry of a clover, with the spaces connected between two helical ascending ramps, around a central atrium. Ben van Berkel, joint founder and director of UNStudio “The Mercedes?Benz Museum sets up an interface for a series of radical spatial principles in order to create a completely new typology”. And by this, he refers to how visitors experience the museum: They do not begin their visit to the exhibition at a conventional entrance at the base of the building. They are transported by lift to the top floor. Here they have the choice of two tours, during which they descend through the building. The paths of each tour meet on each floor, enabling visitors to switch between tours – the Collections tour and Legend tour – should they wish to do so. (from archaily)
